      <image:caption>What I particularly love about this blanket is how the white warp and weft strings interact so subtly, but the pattern is still present. Although there isn’t a clear “pop” of pattern between the white warp and weft, it’s still distinguishable if you look closely enough.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I wove this piece in the spring of 2017. I wanted to see how various colors of warp and weft strings interacted, so I set up my loom with sections of warp strings in different colors. All the wool was hand-dyed for this project, and I love how all the colors came out.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Handwoven Blankets - Ombre Blanket.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Made in the spring of 2018, I used a plain-weave pattern for this blanket to draw the eyes to the color rather than the pattern. Made out of bamboo cotton, I used a cold-water dye vat to slowly dunk my warp strings into the dye, leaving about half the length of the warp strings outside of the bucket. I then let osmosis move the dye up the length of the warp string to give one-sided a faded, ombre look.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Tapestry Weaves - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>This block was particularly challenging to weave because the weight of the pink mohair was so much lighter than the blue wool. As a result, I had to find ways to layer multiple weft shots of the mohair with single shots of the blue wool to keep the piece even. Although it was a complicated technical challenge, I love the final result; the softness of the mohair against the distinct blue gives the block some unique dimensionality.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Tapestry Weaves - Tetris Wall Hanging.</image:title>
      <image:caption>My most recent project to come off the loom, I created this wall hanging for a dear friend. I freehanded all shapes using scrap colors from previous projects. This project was a challenge for me because my warp strings kept snapping! After some quick maneuvering with extra warp string and large metal bolts, I saved the project and created a beautiful final product.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Tapestry Weaves - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>I used very vibrant colors for this piece because I wanted each block to really pop out of the fabric, giving the illusion of three-dimensionals to each block. I secured the top of the piece with wooden dowels that allowed the weaving to lay flat against a wall.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Work - Tapestry Weaves</image:title>
      <image:caption>I used the interlocking weft method to avoid creating holes in the piece, making it very stable for wear and tear. I also used a variety of yarn weight for all of the weft components in this rug, so while weaving, I would have to adapt the number of weft shots I was interlocking between yarns of different weights.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Tapestry Weaves - Block Rug.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Done on my floor loom, this piece traveled to two states and three apartments before I was ready to pull it off the loom. I made a fully weft-facing rug using a traditional tapestry method of spacing out the warp strings. Often working with up to 7 or 8 weft strings at once, I freehanded all of the blocks on this rug, trying to create vibrant pops of color on the cream background.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This little mat was done as a short square on a floor loom. Using some waste yarn, I freehanded a small sunrise over water into this tapestry weave. I used a comb, rather than a beater, to get the clean rounded edges of the sun and light.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I wove this table runner in the winter of 2018 while I was living in Colorado Springs, CO. I hand-dyed alpaca wool for this piece, getting color inspiration from the hues of Pikes Peak Mountain in the evening. What I particularly love about this pattern, known as a birdseye weave, is how it elegantly works the warp and weft colors together. The greys dampen the bright blues and purples in the weft and warp. However, each hue of blue interacts differently with the grey warp, making the birdseye form more or less distinct.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Table Runners - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>As you can see particularly well in this image, brighter or lighter blues make the birdseye form pop out of the piece more, while the purple hues tend to blend the birdseye into the warp color.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Table Runners - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Because of the simplicity of this plain weave, my focus for this piece was to create clean selvage lines and even tension between each weft shot. For this type of weaving, even pressure is critical to getting consistently shaped squares.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Table Runners - Log Cabin Weave .</image:title>
      <image:caption>Can you see where this style of weaving, known as log cabin weave, gets its name from? Though the pattern looks intricate, it is an optical illusion. A plain-weave textile is transformed into a delicate alternating log cabin pattern by placing certain brown or white warp strings next to each other. This table runner was made with alpaca wool sourced from Island Alpaca Company on Martha’s Vineyard in the summer of 2020. I chose these two colors because, while they contrast each other beautifully, the brown and white are not overpowering and allow the pattern to be the focal point of the textile. Also, they reminded me of a snowy cabin in the woods!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Table Runners - Clover Table Runner.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This table runner was fun to weave because I drafted and designed the pattern myself. Although I didn’t realize this when I created this textile, the image is inverted on the back of the weaving. For example, the clover shape on the front of the piece looks like it was cut out from a square of color on the back. Each weft shot of blue or green is secured into place between plain-weave shots of orange. I enjoy how the different weights of weft yarn give the runner a three-dimensional texture. Usually achieved through pick-up double-weave, this piece's dimensional element adds a unique design element.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Table Runners - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>The three dimensional shape of the clovers is very prominent here. Although it is hard to see because of the bulkiness of the yarn, there is a plain-weave shot of orange yarn in between each strand of blue or green yarn. Because of the texture and colors, this runner is a staple for special dinners or events at my home.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Shibori Weaves - Double-Dipped Shibori Blanket.</image:title>
      <image:caption>More complicated than the previous shibori pieces, I used multiple dye sessions to achieve the intricate pattern for this blanket. After pulling this blanket off the loom, I loosely tied it up and dipped it in a light green immersion bath. Once dried, the blanket was a beautiful mottled mint green hue and ready for cinching. After the blanket was cinched, I did multiple rounds of dyes in an actual indigo vat. Once opened and ironed, the blanket revealed a beautiful white, green and blue mix.</image:caption>

Although this was a complicated first sweater to knit, I fell in love with Alice Starmore’s work and took it on as a challenge. Taking just a little under a year to finish, this sweater was constructed from Colorado to Maine and even Ireland. Made entirely out of Montana wool and cabled on US size 4 needles, passion and love went into every stitch of this textile.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Double-Weave - Double Weave Dress.</image:title>
      <image:caption>After taking an Introductory Fiber Arts course in 2018, I wanted to challenge myself to create a textile with more than a 2-dimensional structure. I used a thrifted dress to calculate the dimensions of the dress I wanted, then set up my loom with two layers of hand-dyed bamboo cotton to start my double weave.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61c903240178185697490ca9/c4ddc35d-7ccc-4686-ab25-f3c6cad69df9/IMG_0921-2.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Work - Double-Weave - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Initially, I wove the dress as an open-ended double-weave, meaning that the top and bottom pieces did not connect, giving the dress some much-needed flexibility. Once I had finished the side slits, I began weaving the warp strings together as a tube so the front and back were connected without a seam.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61c903240178185697490ca9/8b0b817b-5c16-4c76-a4c4-df0c61134e69/DSC_1508.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Work - Double-Weave - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Once I reached the underarm area, I switched to an open-sided double weave. For the back and front armpits and necklines (visible in the two above photos), I used hand-weaving techniques to create an angular armpit area and to make distinct straps for the front of the dress. So, rather than weaving all of my warp strings, I selectively incorporated some and not others to make the dress straps. After I finished the dress, I pulled it off of the loom and fixed the ends in place by sewing a few hemlines. I also added darts on both sides to make the fit of the dress more flattering. Finally, using a needle to weave the warp ends back into the dress's neckline (pictured above), I created a pearled neckline that gave the dress a personal, handmade touch.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61c903240178185697490ca9/517a5451-f0df-4bdc-b3c0-f0284239f669/DSC_1520.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Work - Double-Weave - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>This dress is one of my most treasured possessions. For me, it represents the culmination of my fiber artist and designer work. It took a lot of reconfiguring and determination to create a functional piece of art like this, but it was well worth it and brought me a lot of joy to wear. There was intentionality brought to every step of this project, and I think all the pieces come together nicely to form a thoughtful textile.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61c903240178185697490ca9/e3bf77c8-c043-425e-84c4-f1d2854ac9c3/DSC_1490.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Work - Double-Weave - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>To add another layer of dimensionality to the dress, I wove a pocket to adorn the front of the dress using a handloom. I dyed the linen for the pocket in the same dye vats as the front and back warps. I then used the same linen and a blanket stitch to attach the pocket to the front of the dress.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Work - Double-Weave - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Since the dress was woven as a double-weave piece, there was no seam down the side separating the front (white) and back). Therefore, with some minor alterations, I could sew the dress into the outside layer of a bag.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Work - Double-Weave - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>For the final touches on the bag, I used the rest of the reclaimed leather to hand-sew straps for the front of the pack. Inlaid with rivets, these straps keep the bag's flap in place.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This bag started as a happy mistake. I had initially tried to weave another double-weave dress, but when I pulled it off the loom, it didn’t fit! So instead of tossing the fabric, I wanted to salvage it. By altering the material using a sewing machine, I turned the dress into backpack fabric.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Silkworm cocoons contain one true single strand of silk that is embedded in false silk coating. I found a bag full of silkworm cocoons in a freezer in the Colorado College fibers arts studio and decided to try and extract the silk. Although I don’t think I managed to isolate the true piece of silk from the cocoon, the process was a fun trial and error learning experience.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This small 3 x 3 inch square was done on my handloom to experiment with silk that I had extracted from frozen silkworm cocoons. The majority of the weft (grey) was constructed with very soft merino wool, while the colors (yellow, white, blue and red) were all extracted strands of silk.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Handloom Projects - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>After using a detergent to break up the cocoons, I spun the silk into strands. I left some of the silk undyed (yellow and white) and did a hot water (blue) and cold water (red) dye process to obtain the two other colors. I finished the project by using my handloom to create a small handwoven sample embedded with strands of my silk.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Non-Traditional Materials - Snakeskin Weaving.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This incredibly delicate piece is made of a plastic fishing wire warp and dried snake skins collected from my corn snake over two years. After each shed, I would collect the skins, press and dry them, and preserve each one until I had enough to create a whole piece. Because the skins were so delicate, I obtained a table loom to make this piece so I could keep it in a safe studio space while I was working on it. I chose fishing wire as the warp and support weft shots because of the high tensile strength of the fiber. It also allows the eye to focus primarily on the snakeskins while adding a beautiful webbing component to the piece.</image:caption>

I then embroidered the figure onto the paper, and completed the piece by stringing gold beads onto metal wire and attaching them through the paper.</image:title>
